My Next Question: Ubuntu or CentOS?

January 5th, 2010 Adam Tucker No comments

I’m trying to decide which OS will be better for my media server.  I have little experience with CentOS or any Red-Hat based linux system.  I have a few questions:

  1. Is it well supported like Ubuntu?
  2. Is is more security-oreinted?
  3. Which one runs web services better?

I have an IDS running on CentOS right now that I enjoy working on except for the different file placement.  So I’m off to further research CentOS and if you have any thoughts let me know.

Planning My Next Media Server

September 13th, 2009 Adam Tucker Comments off

For my next project as I continue in upgrading my antiquated network, I’m planning or really just waiting to order the hardware for my new media server.  I’m pretty excited about building the media server because of the low power processor, micro atx motherboard, and the cool case.  Compared to most media servers that carry the 1.6GHz Atom this is a little bit much, but the total cost to build minus shipping is around $310, which is cheaper than most commercial home servers.  As expected, I will be running Ubuntu 8.04.3 LTS Server Ed. for the operating system.  I haven’t decided on using 32 or 64 bit.  The main apps I’ll be running are Gallery 3 (which is still in beta), and Subsonic.

Specs on server bought mostly at Newegg:

  • ASRock A780GMH/128M AM3 Micro ATX AMD motherboard
  • AMD Athlon II X2 250 3.0GHz AM3 65w Dual-Core Processor
  • 2GB Kingston HyperX DDR2 1066 RAM
  • WD Caviar Green 750GB SATA
  • Apex DM-387 Slim case with 275 watt power supply
